BEYOND THE SELF

Have you ever felt truly connected to something larger than yourself? For Yamabushi, this feeling arises not from personal gain, but from a deep commitment to the well-being of others. While personal growth is a natural byproduct of Yamabushi training – a clearer mind, a more meditative spirit, deeper self-awareness – these are ultimately secondary to the central purpose: serving others.
Yamabushi training emphasizes selfless service, expressed through the traditional prayers and aspirations we proclaim to the Kami and Buddha while out on the mountains.
During the Master Yamabushi’s final prayer, we pray:
Kokudoan'non (国土安穏): We pray for peace and stability throughout the land, recognizing the interconnectedness of all beings.
Fu'u'junji (風雨順時): We pray for timely wind and rain, that nature's forces may bring nourishment and prevent disaster, ensuring the safety of our communities.
Gokokuhojo (五穀豊穣): We pray for a bountiful harvest, that all may have access to nourishing food.
Banmin no keraku (萬民快楽): We pray for the health, happiness, and prosperity of all people.
We pray for a safe journey in the afterlife for the souls of those who have passed. We especially pray for those lost to natural disasters who have no one to pray on their behalf.
We pray specifically for the health and wellbeing of those in our training, as well as all of the lives they have touched.
By reciting these prayers, Yamabushi extend their compassion to all beings. In turn, this practice encourages us to reflect on the individuals who have shaped our lives and supported us on our path.
As we strive to share the profound essence of Yamabushi training with you, we were deeply moved by a recent video from NHK World: Mt. Gassan: Climbing as a Form of Prayer. It beautifully captures the deeply emotive and significant role of mountain asceticism in Japanese culture.
Mt. Gassan: Climbing as a Form of Prayer
For those who have joined us on the mountains, the video will undoubtedly resonate, reminding you of the powerful connection we forge with nature and spirit. In a way, the culminating moment of this video encapsulates why we are so passionate about bringing this tradition to you. It's a testament to the transformative power of Yamabushi practice, and we hope it inspires you as much as it has inspired us.
As you reflect on the lessons from the mountains this month, we hope you will consider those who have impacted your life, big or small, and the ways in which you can express your gratitude.
And, as always, if you’re interested in experiencing Yamabushi training firsthand, simply inquire on our website and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
We hope to see you on the mountains soon.
